DR. CHAD HEWLETT

What inspired you to become
an equine veterinarian?
Growing up in rural America-southern Iowa on a ranch we always had horses as part of our life, we used horses to check and gather cows. As a young person growing up I just thought I would follow in the footsteps of my heritage of ranching. Never really looked at anything else till my father informed me that we were in a difficult situation-18 percent interest rates and a farming crisis. I would need to choose a different path-I choose being a veterinarian and rest has lead me to being in equine practice for 31 years.

What is your favourite part
of working with horses?
I just love the industry, I enjoy how the human/animal relationship is so strong in all the disciplines. I have so many great experiences from the horse as a connection to these people. It is an amazing outlet for pursuing excellence, horses have so much try in them.

Do you have a special area
of interest or expertise
within equine care?

Soundness-just love the challenge of a puzzle- Am I in the right place and do I have the right treatment.

What are your favourite activities to do in your free time?

Time with our children-Sunday afternoons at our home, vacations or enjoying activities that they love.
Playing golf on a beautiful sunny day on very nice golf course.
Fly fishing on a western mountain river or stream, in complete silence except for the sounds of nature.
Surfing in the ocean-soft and easy waves
Working on our farm-animals and projects to improve the environment.
