Our sports medicine focus includes the overall maintenance and well-being of your equine athlete with a focus on preventative care. For our team, an equine athlete can be an Olympic-level dressage horse, or the beloved senior horse that takes your peewee rider around the barrel pattern safely. Equine athletes come in all shapes, sizes and breeds, but have a common link - they are loved and appreciated by their owners, who want the very best for them. That’s where we come in!

We often hear “my horse doesn’t seem right”, or “I think he’s sore in front, but can’t tell which leg,” or “my horse is off” Horse owners are very in-tune to their equine partners, but pin pointing the exact issue usually takes a trained eye, experience and an ability to break down the movement. When we hear your horse is “sore” or “off”, 9 times out of 10 your appointment will begin with a discussion between yourself and one of our veterinarians and then a soundness exam and evaluation will be performed.

During a soundness exam our veterinarians are able to observe the horse through movement and flexions to help us identify areas of concern to focus on. The process will help narrow down the actual point of lameness, and from there further diagnostics, like x-ray or ultrasound, and a comprehensive treatment plan can be explored. Our veterinarians will diagnose and then recommend applicable and beneficial treatments for your horse. Our veterinarians are committing to ensuring that the client is always aware of any options available for their horse and what the expected outcome may be.

Regenerative Therapies at Energy Equine

Regenerative therapies is a large part of our practice. Our clinic is able to offer several methods of regenerative treatment to a wide range of injuries. Regenerative therapies describe treatments that utilize the horse’s own biological agents to aid in healing and recovery. These include treatments such as PRP, IRAP and Stem Cells. We are constantly educating ourselves on cutting edge regenerative technologies and how we can best utilize them for our clients. We are excited to employ the Angel system, the only fully automated system that utilizes 2-sensor technology and one-button automation to prepare customized PRP formulations. This system has the capability to deliver platelet concentrations up to 18x baseline, meaning we are acquiring more high quality PRP formulations than before. We have used there therapies successfully and are confident and proud to be able to offer them when and where the situation would benefit most.

Sports medicine doesn't always mean looking at the outside of your horse...

...It often includes a look within. Common complaints for performance horses include ulcers and respiratory issues. Our clinic offers endoscopy services, such as gastroscopes and respiratory scopes, ulcer treatment, gastric management plans and bronchoalveolar lavage, amongst others.

Lastly, are you looking for your next equine partner? Energy Equine is proud to offer pre-purchase examinations and can consult on pre-purchase exams, as well.

What are your favourite activities to do in your free time â€‹

In my limited free time I enjoy being outdoors, watching and playing sports,

mountain biking and golfing. BUT more than anything I enjoy spending time

with my wife, Dr. Bailey Smith, and our daughter, especially summers at the lake!
